D-mannose has been proposed as an alternative approach for managing Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs) since it can inhibit the bacterial adhesion to the urothelium. D-mannose can bind Type-1 fimbriae (Mannose-sensitive fimbriae) on the surface of pathogens (i.e: Escherichia Coli), forming a physical “coating”, which prevent their adhesion to the bladder and promote their elimination with the urine. Unlike antibiotics, D-Mannose does not induce the development of resistant bacteria, so it is useful for long-term treatments.
